Why Whitby Makes the Perfect Long Weekend — and How to Make the Most of Every Moment

By Patricia Fenwick, Soft Goblet Senior Travel Writer

Whitby is one of those rare places that seems to have been designed for the sole purpose of making people happy. The harbour, the fish and chips, the dramatic Abbey ruins, the 199 steps, the jet jewellery shops — there is something here for absolutely everyone. Here is how to spend a long weekend there without missing a thing.

Arrive on Friday afternoon, when the day-trip crowds have thinned and the harbour takes on a golden evening light. Check into your hotel, unpack without any rush, and take a slow walk along the West Cliff to get your bearings and breathe in the sea air.

On Saturday morning, begin with a proper Yorkshire breakfast at your hotel. Then head to the market — held on Church Street on Saturdays — where local producers sell everything from fresh crab to handmade preserves. This is authentic Whitby at its best.

By mid-morning, consider climbing the famous 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. The steps are evenly spaced and many visitors pause on the benches placed along the route. The views from the top are quite simply magnificent — and the Abbey itself is hauntingly beautiful.

Saturday afternoon is ideal for the Whitby Museum on Pannett Park — a wonderful, eccentric collection of natural history, maritime artefacts, and local curiosities. It is one of those places where you keep finding fascinating things in glass cases.

Saturday evening: fish and chips, obviously. Magpie Café is the famous choice and the queue moves steadily. Alternatively, the Quayside Restaurant offers a more relaxed sit-down version with the same quality of fresh local fish.

Sunday morning is perfect for a quieter coastal walk — towards Robin Hood's Bay if you are feeling energetic, or simply along the piers to watch the fishing boats come in. Whitby at its most peaceful.

Before leaving on Sunday, do browse the jet jewellery shops on Church Street. Whitby jet is unique to this coastline and makes for a genuinely meaningful memento of a visit.
